Character: Jude Mathis
Canon: Post Tales of Xillia 2 end
Age: 16

Background Information: Aselia Wiki, Xillia 1 official biography

Personality:
Kind busybody: Jude is very quick to poke his nose in places where it doesn't belong to lend a helping hand to just about anybody, the entire reason why he went from "honours student" to "fugitive wanted by the state" in record time at the start of X1. Born out of a craving for acknowledgement and his own empathetic nature, Jude just can't ignore people in need. Leia, Elise, and Milla all grew attached to him for selflessly helping them out, even if they were complete strangers: he helped Leia recover from a very tough and draining operation as a child (and gaining her crush in the process), took in Elise without question once it became clear how ostracized and lonely she was in Hamil, and saved Milla from drowning after she lost the Four to the Lance of Kresnik. He's also the first to befriend Ludger and offer his help in the latter's misadventures in X2 for the same reason, being present when Ludger discovers his crushing debt to the Spirius Organization. Alvin points out how it's the biggest factor that gets Jude himself in trouble all the time, but everyone still praises and cherishes him for his kindness and earnestness. His lack of hesitation in being so giving and always ready to assist others may be borderline reckless, but it's also what makes him trustworthy and reliable - he DOES finish what he starts, and they owe him much.

Analytical planner: Matching his mild mannerisms, Jude is also calm, which compliments well his observant and logical nature. Howe’s principle is one he often repeats from the very start of X1: "once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Commented as ‘freakishly even-headed’ by party members, he can keep a cool head under stressful and dangerous situations. Several times in X1, he was able to make use of his direct environment to formulate a plan in helping the party overcome an immediate crisis. Upon running into Presa’s ambush and capture of Milla at Kijara Seafalls, he quickly noticed the crab monster disguised as a rock nearby. Upon communicating that fact to Alvin, they were able to use it to distract Presa and free Milla. When pursued by Jiao in the Sapstrath Deepwood and put at a disadvantage due to all the wolf monsters that the Horn of the Chimeriad commanded with ease, Jude noticed the smokeshrooms nearby and was able to plan a smokescreen diversion with them that helped the party successfully escape.

Principled idealist: Jude strives hoping for the best even if it’s an unattainable ideal on paper, for what is impossible is simply what hasn’t been attempted successfully yet by anyone else before. At the end of X1, he willingly chose to dispel the Schism to save the withering world of Elympios that has almost no more mana left, even if it was a risk to the remaining spirits on Rieze Maxia. The gambit was to find a way for humans and spirits to coexist peacefully together, in spite of Elympios's spyrix technology which kills Spirits by design. More importantly, he chose that for himself even though it will separate him from Milla, which encapsulates his personal growth throughout X1 as he was willing to give up seeing the most important individual to him for the sake of the greater good. In X2, he abandons his standing spyrite research immediately despite all the hard work he's put into it after finding out that it was controlling spirits against their will, as it is unethical and goes against his goal of peaceful coexistence between humans and spirits. He has a strong sense of morality, and despite lacking in self-confidence, he doesn't lose sight of his goal no matter how stuck he feels. This happens several times during his character story in X2, until he eventually makes a breakthrough thanks to spending time with Celsius.

Grounded pacifist: Jude doesn't like to fight. Bullied as a child, he only learned to fight because Sonia, Leia's mother, insisted on teaching him in order to defend himself. It'll certainly come in plenty handy for his adventures across two worlds and beyond once he grows up, but by large, Jude would rather get hit rather than dish out hits, and will try to go with the peaceful option whenever possible. That is not to say he'd shy away from fighting if it's what he must do, as he dons his gauntlets for plenty of reasons across both games. At first it was to avoid capture while on the run helping Milla, then to protect her and the friends important to him, and finally, to prove the strength of his resolve to literal gods and kings alike. Jude goes so far as to punch the real Lord of Spirit Maxwell in the face when he wrote Milla off to be a dispensable puppet in X1, and then fights Gaius heads on without backing down when they could not agree on what to do about the Schism: Gaius was ready to let Elympios die for the sake of Rieze Maxia, while Jude believed in saving both worlds. In X2, he actively helps Ludger in quashing the fractured dimensions, for the sake of the prime dimension they live in and everything he's worked to bring forth since X1. Jude may not be assertive, but after all his growth in X1, he is absolutely not a coward.

Naïve innocent: Jude may be book smart, but he used to be lacking in many other areas. He was all theory and no experience at the start of X1, and paired with his trusting nature, tends to buy way too easily into what his friends tell him. Alvin and Rowen practically make it a sport out of teasing him in both games, getting him to yell “TEACH ME ABOUT BAZONGAS” at full lung power. Jude also remains firmly lodged on the butt end of all tethering jokes Muzet loves to make. X1 and X2 events did provide him with plenty of experiences of all sorts, and while he remains very bulliable to his friends, he grew enough of a backbone to stand up for himself too. He politely tells off an Elympion businessman who tries using Celsius' Spirit Fossil to pressure his research in X2, standing steadfast to his morals and ideals when push comes to shove in serious situations.

Abilities & Inventory: Jude can heal and punch and kick. Xillia 2 Artes list. Inventory wise, he'll have with him his Allium Orb, the clothes on his back, a pair of battle gauntlets, a pair of reading glasses, and a bottle of hair gel.

Dreamotion wise, with mod permission, Jude would be likely to end up creating sprite-like familiars that are reminiscent to spyrites from Xillia, but function more similarly to Boosters. These globs of Dreamotion energy are not sentient, but would have mild supportive effects such as help ward off nightmares or enhance the mood/stabilize the Dreamotion abilities of whoever they are made for/assigned to accompany (maybe utilizing elements from the dream lantern of the "client"). They can also be "consumed" as a one-time power-up to strengthen Dreamotion abilities. A custom element to it would be neat; once he gets a good hang of it, he could personalize these familiars to the person he's creating them for, which can take the physical shape of mascot creatures from other characters' canons (ie Moogles for FF characters)? Abilities he develops would be mainly supportive in nature to others, in line with his personality and everything he's tried achieving in canon.

Suitability & Plans: Jude is suitable anywhere because he's a nosy goody two shoe who is physically incapable of ignoring others in need of help. Paired with his natural curiosity and analytical mind, he can work in any setting from horror to slice of life. He will strive to do his best no matter where, because he's quite determined to make the world he lives in a better place after all the development he's gone through in X1.

Dreamotion energy seems similar to mana in Xilliaverse, so from that point alone Jude would gladly take the opportunity offered by Songerein to experiment in order to enrich his spyrite research from home. He's also very respectful of spirits/nature in general, so he'd happily help the locals. As a massive nerd he has shenanigan potential, I'm honestly just interested to throw him around and see what happens. He's no extroverted social butterfly, but he should have no trouble branching out either.

Also if there isn't a clinic already he would most likely try to get one set up somehow, one way or another. Better be safe than sorry!
